Battery life is especially important on a mobile device. Our first priority was saving power while you are using the Librem 5 and Librem 5 USA. It’s also important to save power when you aren’t using your phone. Suspending your phone when it’s idle is the key way to increase overall battery life, and recently we’ve made progress in suspending the Librem 5. This is still a work-in-progress experimental feature, but once it’s stable, we will enable it by default. In the meantime, let’s see how suspend works on the Librem 5 and Librem 5 USA.
To enable suspend, head into power settings. For now, the shortest suspend timer is 15 minutes. This will put the phone into an ultra low power state once the phone has no user input for 15 minutes and no apps are blocking suspend.Enabling suspend while plugged-in can help speed up charging. While suspended, your phone won’t be actively running apps, but it will be listening for calls and text from the modem, which should wake up the device when needed. Pressing the power key will also bring the phone out of suspend manually. When a call comes in, and your phone is suspended. The modem sends a message to your Librem 5 asking it to wake up, where the call is handled as usual.Fixing the delay between resume and the modem reappearing is high on our to-do list. Once done, it will significantly help add to the reliability of incoming calls and texts.
In a follow-up post, we will dive into the numbers and measure what kind of battery life you can expect with suspend turned on in some common use cases. As a teaser, you can expect to see an increase of 50% to 100% checking your phone once per hour.
