Surveillance, Breaches, and Gaps in the Law

It has become clear that privacy risks are not isolated incidents. They are part of a larger pattern.  Major organizations continue to experience large scale data breaches.

  • Brightspeed recently suffered a breach affecting around one million customers. Brightspeed opened an internal cybersecurity investigation in early January this year, after Crimson Collective, claimed it had accessed company systems and had stolen customer data.
  • The University of Phoenix reported a breach in early December affecting nearly 3.5 million people. The incident began in August, when attackers gained access to the university’s network and quietly extracted sensitive information. The intrusion was not discovered until November 21.

When these breaches happen, it is not just a company dealing with a technical problem. It is everyday people whose names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and other sensitive information become at risk of circulating in places they can’t control and never intended.

Since there is still no comprehensive federal privacy law. Protections differ from state to state. If you happen to live in a state with strong privacy regulations, you may have certain rights and remedies. If you do not, your data could be far more exposed with little recourse.

Convenience has become the quiet tradeoff. Social media platforms, cloud storage services, and AI driven personalization tools promise simplicity and speed. And often, they deliver. But that convenience usually comes at a cost. In many cases, the price is your personal information.

Once your data leaves your control, it is extremely difficult to retrieve it or limit how it is used in the future.

Purism’s Approach: Privacy by Design

At Purism, we believe privacy cannot be an afterthought. It cannot be something a company promises to improve after a breach or public backlash. It must be the starting point.  Our goal is to protect your privacy.

Purism focuses on building products such as the Librem 5, Librem 14, and PureOS around one core principle, that you remain in control.  This means your data stays with you.

  • Devices are designed with local first storage and encrypted communications, and information does not automatically flow to third parties in the background.
  • Hardware kill switches allow you to physically disable the camera, microphone, and wireless radios. If you turn them off, they are truly off. There is no hidden software override.
  • You control your own credentials. When you hold your encryption keys, phishing attacks and credential theft lose much of their power.

Our mission is straightforward. Your device should never share your data without your explicit consent.  For us, sovereignty is not optional.

Why This Matters Right Now

Artificial intelligence is changing how we browse, shop, communicate, and work. Personalization has become the default setting across digital services. Advertisements, news feeds, search results, and product recommendations which are becoming increasingly tailored to each individual.

But personalization can quietly become a benefit many do not fully understand. You receive convenience and customization in exchange for personally identifiable information.  Without strong safeguards, personalization can evolve into the loss of privacy. In regions where regulations are weak or poorly enforced, companies may collect and monetize personal data with few limits.

At the same time, social engineering attacks are increasing. Cybercriminals often do not need to break through complex security systems. They simply gain access and access personal data. When credentials are compromised, millions or even billions of users can be affected.

The Bottom Line

Privacy is not gone. But we have to protect it.

Technology has already reshaped the landscape of personal privacy. That cannot be reversed. The real question is who will control the next chapter.  At Purism, we believe the answer should always be you.
