If you are curious to know how and why it matters where your phone is manufactured, CNBC’s new short documentary is for you. “Purism is one American company that has been able to do what many are calling the impossible” it says.
CNBC wanted to find out why tech giants aren’t making smartphones in America. Take a look at Purism’s effort to make electronics in the USA. The video takes you into our factories to show you how we produce Librem 5 USA, privacy-first phone with Made in USA electronics. They also published a news article here.
In 2021, we launched the Librem 5 USA to better control the supply chain. We invested in the future and sustainability of USA’s manufacturing during the global supply chain disruptions. Since then, we have delivered thousands of Librem phones to global consumers who care about where their phones are made. In fact, in August 2022, we announced the shipping parity for Librem 5 USA phones, which means that the new orders can be shipped within 10 days. We think local, but we ship global.
Hear From Purism Leadership
At 7:22, you will hear from Todd Weaver, Purism’s CEO and Founder. He started the Social Purpose Company with a clear vision to respect freedom, security and privacy. Purism provides consumers a real alternative to the oppression by Big Tech companies.
“We started the company in 2014, doing manufacturing in the United States of America. Purism’s a hardware manufacturer, as well as software. So we do laptops, mini PCs, and also a phone that run the same operating system that we authored.”
At about 15:06, Kyle Rankin, President of Purism, talks about how Librem 5 USA reduces the links in the supply chain to reduce the opportunities to tamper with hardware. “At Purism we think data is uranium, so we treat it like a radioactive substance where we collect as little of it as humanly possible. Every extra link you add to the supply chain is an extra opportunity for someone to inject themselves in that supply chain and tamper with things.”

The Future of Made in USA Electronics
The future of where phones get manufactured are in the hands of several players: the governments, the supply chain players and most importantly, you. Consumers can play a part by voting with their wallet.
