Monetization of Personal Information vs. Social Purpose

Google: Turning Data into Revenue

Google’s business model runs on advertising. Most of its revenue comes from ads shown on Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail, and other services. Advertisers pay when users view or click, and those ads are powered by Google’s vast data collection.

  • Data Collection: Every search, map query, and browsing session feeds Google’s profile of you. Analytics tracks your activity across millions of sites, while Android integrates tools like Gemini to capture chats, screenshots, and voice recordings—building an intimate behavioral record.
  • Ad Targeting: Google converts this information into demographic and interest labels, giving advertisers the ability to micro-target with surgical precision.

In this system, your personal data is the product being sold.

Purism, SPC: Privacy as Principle

Purism was founded as a Social Purpose Corporation (SPC), a legal framework that locks social good into its charter, above the pursuit of profit. Its mission is to uphold users’ privacy, freedom, and security, guided by the Free Software movement.  Purism rejects the ad surveillance economy at its root. Unlike Google and other Big Tech firms that rely on behavioral profiling, opaque algorithms, and monetized attention flows, Purism builds its platform on transparency and user respect. Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is never used for analytics or monetization. The only PII collected is the bare minimum required to ship products to customers—nothing more.

Key commitments include:

  • 100% free/libre and open source software in operating systems, kernels, and applications.
  • Hardware engineered for privacy and long-term security.
  • A transparent, trustworthy supply chain.
  • Collecting only the bare minimum of Personal Identifiable Information (PII) required to fulfill orders—never for analytics or monetization.

Purism ships all of its hardware and software with privacy on by default, designed to block as many third‑party trackers, data harvesters, and surveillance mechanisms as possible right out of the box. There are no hidden trackers, no third‑party data brokers, and no dependency on ad exchanges. Privacy isn’t a toggle buried in settings—it’s the foundation of the ecosystem.

Selling Your Attention vs. Protecting Your Rights

The Justice Department and a coalition of states are pursuing antitrust action against Google, accusing it of running monopolistic ad-tech systems that exploit users and lock out competition. Regulators are weighing remedies that could force structural changes to Google’s ad empire.

By rejecting surveillance capitalism, Purism demonstrates that a sustainable digital economy can thrive without exploiting personal data or locking publishers into monopolistic ad networks.  Proving that a company can sustain itself without turning personal data into profit. At Purism, users aren’t products—their rights are the purpose.
