To do all that, we think differently across all areas of business and technology.

Purism Differentiator Series, Part 13: Modularity & Right to Repair

Purism advances modularity and is a supporter of right to repair, which ties to the ability to own your product. In some products Purism is top-to-bottom (All code released all the way to schematics released), the Librem 5 and Liberty Phone products are top-to-bottom with modular modems, replaceable battery, and schematics released. In other products Purism strongly advances modularity and right-to-repair, the Librem 14, Librem Mini, and Librem 11 have all the source code released, with partial schematics released, and offer some modularity but all honor a right to repair.

Right to Repair (and Beyond)

Pick a random consumer device lying around your house and imagine someone coming across it after 70 years of neglect. Part of the device no longer works. Would they be able to fix it?

Today, devices are designed to be cheap, short-lived and disposable. The assumption is that if something you buy breaks, the only solution is to throw it away. Repairability and longevity is simply not a factor in most consumers’ minds.

Tutorials on Repairing

Purism often shares teardown docs and repair videos, from repairing the Librem 14 to a disassembly of the Librem 5, to the complete manufacturing process of the Liberty Phone (previously the Librem 5 USA); you can see how much Purism cares about putting the power of modularity and the right to repair into the hands of customers. You own the device, you should be able to do with it what you will.

Designed to be Modular

The Librem 5 and Liberty Phone were designed for security benefits with hardware isolation, that also has a design benefit of modularity, Purism’s Director of Product goes into more detail on the design behind a modular and secure mobile phone, including isolated components through M.2 expansion slots, hardware kill-switches, owning the keys of your device, modularity, and software freedom.

Bonus 3d Printing

Purism also has a highly engaged community sharing 3d prints of cases, and we joined in the fun by providing a post 3D Print a Modular Librem 11 Back Cover.
